The Phillipsburg community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Detective Sergeant Brett Marino (#321), a highly respected and deeply loved member of the Phillipsburg Police Department, who passed away following a courageous battle with illness.
With profound sadness, the department announced his passing this week, remembering him not only as a dedicated law enforcement officer but also as a beloved friend, husband, father, and mentor whose presence left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Det. Sgt. Marino proudly served the Phillipsburg Police Department for 13 years, earning admiration from colleagues and community members alike for his professionalism, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice. His exceptional skill and drive were recognized early in his career, leading him to a position in the department’s Special Operations Division, where he specialized in narcotics and street crime investigations. His work made a tangible difference in keeping Phillipsburg’s streets safe and its residents protected.
But beyond the badge, Brett was known for his heart, humor, and humanity. He was the kind of man who made people feel at ease — whether through a quick joke, a listening ear, or a reassuring smile. To his colleagues, he was the glue that held the team together — a steady, positive force even in the toughest situations. To his family, he was a pillar of strength and love.
“Brett was everyone’s best friend,” one fellow officer shared. “He was the guy who could make you laugh when you needed it most, the voice of reason when things got rough, and the kind of person who made every room brighter just by walking in.”
His battle with illness revealed the same determination and resilience that defined his life in service. When doctors gave him a six-month prognosis, Brett refused to give up. Instead, he fought valiantly for nearly two years, inspiring those around him with his courage, humor, and unshakable faith. Friends and colleagues describe his fight as nothing short of heroic — a testament to his warrior’s spirit and boundless will to live for those he loved most.
Det. Sgt. Marino is survived by his devoted wife, his four beloved children, three brothers, one sister, and a large extended family — including his brothers and sisters in blue, who will forever carry his memory with pride and reverence.
In a statement, the Phillipsburg Police Department expressed their gratitude to the community for their outpouring of support during this difficult time:
“To our community — thank you for standing with us. Please continue to keep Sergeant Marino, his family, and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as we honor a life of service, courage, and love.”
Plans for memorial services and public tributes will be announced in the coming days, giving the community an opportunity to pay their respects to a man who gave so much to those around him.
Though his watch has ended, Detective Sergeant Brett Marino’s legacy of service, strength, and kindness will live on — in the community he protected, in the family he cherished, and in the countless lives he touched along the way.
